Port Charlotte isn’t just a whisky, it’s a statement from the windswept shores of Islay. Crafted by Bruichladdich to revive the heavily peated style once made in the nearby village of Port Charlotte, this expression is bold, smoky, and unapologetically Islay, yet with surprising elegance beneath the intensity. It’s a dram that tells tales of salt spray, smouldering fires, and rugged coastlines.

Port Charlotte Scottish Barley (Heavily Peated) Sample
Brand: Port Charlotte | Category: Islay Single Malt | ABV: 50% | Origin: Islay, Scotland | Vol: 3cl

Tasting Profile:
Nose: Bracing and coastal, like bonfires on the beach, seaweed draped rocks, smoked barley, lemon rind, and earthy sweetness.
Palate: Viscous and powerful, waves of peat smoke crash alongside malty richness, charred oak, toasted vanilla, and hints of ripe pear and pepper.
Finish: Lingering and smoky, a tidal pull of ashy peat, dry herbs, and sea salt that fades slowly, like a memory of Islay mist.

Production Details:
Distilled from 100% Scottish-grown barley and peated to 40ppm, this whisky is matured exclusively on Islay in a mix of first-fill bourbon, sherry, and French wine casks. Non chill filtered, naturally coloured, and bottled at 50% ABV, it’s crafted with transparency and terroir in mind, echoing the distillery’s belief that whisky should reflect its place and people.

Perfect For:
Evenings when the wind howls and you crave something elemental. Ideal by a bonfire, on stormy nights, or anytime you're in need of a smoky companion with soul.

Expert Notes:
Praised by critics for balancing raw peat power with clarity and complexity, Port Charlotte is often considered a gateway to peated whiskies, intense but not aggressive, cerebral yet wild at heart.

Customer Reviews:
🗣️ “Felt like licking a burnt log in the best possible way. Loved every sip.”
🗣️ “Peaty but polished, like a wild islander in a tailored suit.”
🗣️ “Not for the faint of heart. But if you're into smoke, this one's a revelation.”

Interesting Fact:
Though named after the long-closed Port Charlotte distillery, this whisky is made at Bruichladdich, just a few miles away, with plans to one day reopen a modern Port Charlotte distillery on its original site.

Serving Suggestions:
Best enjoyed neat to appreciate its full character. Add a few drops of water to tame the heat and release hidden layers of citrus, brine, and barley sugar.

Distillery Background:
Bruichladdich Distillery stands as a rebel on Islay, known for innovation, radical transparency, and a fierce sense of place. Reopened in 2001, it champions barley provenance, local sourcing, and sustainability. With Port Charlotte, they’ve resurrected an old Islay style, combining heritage with modern craftsmanship in every smoky, unforgettable drop.
