Description:

An inexpensive blended scotch in a tiny bitty bottle appeals to me. It offers so much potential. Could this be the newest vintage find from the era when blended scotch was the norm? Has this one withstood the test of time and held up against the stifling effects of a crazy whisky market? I might discover a new favorite discount bottle that I can blend or savor without being judged.

Inver House Distillers, the company behind Balblair, Old Pulteney, Speyburn, Balmenach, and anCnoc, makes Hankey Bannister. It should come as no surprise that the blend includes malt from each of these distilleries, but little else is known.

We only have a miniature of the Original mix without an age remark, while the line contains very substantial items with age statements of 12, 21, 25, and 40 years. The name is actually a conjugation of the names of the brand's founders, Beaumont Hankey and Hugh Bannister, despite sounding like a ridiculous British wordplay.

Light grain, lemon peel, and a significant amount of grain-neutral spirit are all detectable on the nose (vodka).

Pleasant, creamy texture on the palate. The flavor is dominated by a lemon flavor akin to Glenkinchie that isn't really countered by anything, not even the lingering notes of vodka.

The conclusion is brief. Lemon candy, a little marshmallow sweetness, and vodka. Finishes with vodka, as you could have imagined.

Overall: I had the impression that a lesser-known (in the United States) homestyle blend would be the antidote to the standard blend, bringing the love of blended scotch from the Old World into the 21st century. Unfortunately, this is brown vodka in the worst possible way since there is far too much "light whisky"—basically grain-neutral spirit or vodka—and not nearly enough flavorful malt to balance it out. Apart from the ridiculous British moniker, its sole positive attributes are a raised ABV and some lovely lemon aromas.
