Description:

I was thrilled when the Tomatin French Collection was revealed last month. Although £65 appears like a reasonable price on the market and the outturn of 6,000 led to decent availability, buying all three at once is pricey. It's also important to keep in mind that if you shop around, you can buy a good single-cask Tomatin at cask strength for the same price. For instance, the wonderful Tomatin Verdejo cask trilogy, which is only available at the Aberdeen Whisky Shop, is currently discounted to £65. It's a good thing that Simon Burgess of my whisky club divided a set because I decided to join in and bring this review. Now, those with keen eyes will observe that there are 4 whiskies being released today, with a fifth arriving in September. A little more.

I have to say that I enjoy Tomatin. Full disclosure: I went to the distillery in 2019 and purchased an Oloroso that had finished maturing, but I ought to have gotten the more uncommon virgin oak. I recently bought an additional Whisky Meets Sherry I previously reviewed. In the meanwhile, I liked a few of the Cuatro series, which aimed to highlight different sherry varieties and cost less than £50 when it was first introduced. These whiskies were also very enjoyable to drink. Tomatin is thought to have a good finish in the whisky community.

Fresh, juicy apples, pear skins, vanilla rice pudding with apricot jam, and a sprinkle of nutmeg and brown sugar, as well as a yeasty, malty flavor.

Mouthfeel: Apple crumble, canned pineapple, half a teaspoon of marmite, a hint of waxiness, blossom honey, and a vivid effervescence on the tongue at the finish.

These bourbon barrel-aged whiskies are fantastic because they tease at the potential for the future growth of tropical fruit flavors;

What value would these casks have after 25 years? But even at this advanced age, there is a true sweet spot for value and enjoyment in the harmony between the spirit and the wood's mellowing. It's a rare whisky that I can state that I enjoyed every sip and looked forward to the next time I poured more.
