Description:

The third—or fourth?—generation of Tanqueray's Malacca Gin is now available. It wasn't until 1997 that a gin that didn't have the characteristic juniper-forward London Dry flavor would become the focal point and pave the way for contemporary gin while being based on one of Charles Tanqueray's favorite recipes from 1830. (see Malacca, the granddaddy of modern gin).

This gin is a good drinking gin, light and fresh with a little zing to it, despite being a little harsher than the strange alcohol level of 41.3%* suggests.

Now let’s talk about the fragrance. Floral accents Citrus and spice dominate, especially the top botanicals of rose and grapefruit as well as the sharpness of pepper and cinnamon, but juniper aren't far behind with just a hint of licorice in the background. It has a large nose and strong flavors.

It's difficult to say what you taste first when you sip, but I believe it's the spice, which is then slightly mellowed by a hint of sweetness before being followed by the astringency of grapefruit and lemon pith. Right behind those flavors are some floral undertones and a strong enough juniper backbone to ensure that you won't mistake this for anything other than gin.

Licorice and black pepper are the primary spices in the blend, followed by a middle note of coriander, a finish note of ginger, a middle note of nutmeg, and a finish note of angelica. The mouthfeel is slightly greasy, and the finish is crisp and flavorful.
