It's strange, isn't it, that after tasting and writing about scotch whisky for almost ten years, we can still pick up a bottle and say, "That's a real distillery." This golden elixir still has a lot to teach us. In fact, it contributes to the fact that my blog is still known as "The Scotch Noob" I'll always be a newbie. Never will we stop learning about whisky.

True, the settlement of Tomnavoulin is home to the sizable (6 stills) Speyside distillery known as Tamnavulin. It was built in 1966, making it a relatively modern Scottish distillery. After 12 years of inactivity, it reopened in 2007 after rehabilitation.

Whyte & Mackay owns and runs Tamnavulin, just like they do with Jura and Dalmore (now a division of Emperador). The vast majority of its output, as is the case with most of the "lesser-known" distilleries, is utilized in blends, especially those created by Whyte & Mackay. Beginning in 2016, Tamnavulin whisky was officially offered once more as a single malt.

Around the nose, it has a malty, nutty, and meaty flavour. Beeswax & coconut butter have rich, opulent smells. The aroma of toasted, fatty nuts almost makes me think of ghee. The weak sherry aromas largely contribute nuttiness and a flimsy hint of dates or prunes.

In the mouth, It has a thin-body impression. There is hardly any tongue burning. There is a faint smoky flavour, like smoked salt, but the roasted nuts, dates, and chewy, buttery toffee dominate the flavour profile.

The conclusion is Medium-long overall. The same scent characteristics return with a fury; rich, buttery tastes, toasted almonds, and a hint of port wine remain until the finish. Before fading, this somewhat changes by introducing black liquorice.

Incredibly nice and surprisingly rich flavours. What really appeals to me about this whisky is the butter; we don't typically find it in them. It has less fruit and more butter/nuttiness than GlenDronach 12 years, but it also has certain similarities. It's a shame that this isn't really offered in the US.
