Description:

I'd like to look at three intriguing bottles from our friends at Nantou Distillery in Taiwan today. The hot heat necessitates shorter maturation times, explosively high ABVs, and plenty of fun and experimenting with various production techniques and barrel treatments, much like Amrut in India. Despite being behind in tracking all of these releases, Whiskybase does have the bottle from Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corp.'s Nantou Distillery from 2015, which is the one that most closely resembles the one I am evaluating today.

A cask-strength single malt finished in a Plum Liqueur barrel is available from Nantou Omar. This bottle has a non-chill filtered date of 2020.10.08 (F).

On their official website, you may learn a little bit more about the Plum Liqueur Barrel Finish (archive). Black wine grapes with vividly sour and astringent tannins are grown under the Changhua Erlin cane. This bottled malt whisky condenses the three main elements of heaven and earth and is elegant deep purple-red from grape peels, turning whisky into a very attractive ruby red and asking you to experience the history of Taiwan's country.

Deep ruby red dominates the center, with a thin bronze margin. The delicious perfume of cooked bananas is the first to release, followed by the aromas of grape jam, spices, and toasted bread. In the bottom layer, the aromas of dried plums and brown sugar cake initially emerge, followed by the subdued aroma of sandalwood.

Without retaining its full-bodied flavor, it is soft and thin. In the mouth, the grapes initially taste slightly green and then become sweet and nebulous, with a faint smokey flavor.

This superb whisky from the Kingdom of Fruits is possibly the only one in the world that is finished with plum liqueur (also known as umeshu), and it is quite fruity and delightful. Remember that this is by no means a traditional ex-Bourbon/ex-Sherry profile; rather, it is more of a dessert cordial.
