I've previously tried a few whiskies from the Mars Shinshu distillery's Iwai series of blends, but I wasn't really impressed. Despite having heard positive things, the temptation was too high when I saw a single malt from them. Overall, this whisky is good. Along with some of the more vegetal notes you can get from a worm tub distillate, you get some great fortified wine aromas in the nose. The slight aromas of mushrooms on the palate are unmistakably unique but appealing. The apricot and vanilla bean paste tones that appear in the background give this song some excellent depth while preventing it from being overly weird and earthy. Here, fortified wine and fruit flavors that are nearly musty are present. Grape muscats and a hint of musty sherry are discernible. Aloe vera and a combination of dried herbs, coupled with a hint of shisho, have a few more vegetal notes. It has a "worm-tubby" heaviness, a hefty feeling, and notes that are almost gassy.
This has a particularly lovely mouthfeel thanks to those heavy "worm-tubby" flavors. A little meatiness and a little mushroom-y stink can be detected in this dish. Some of those herbal undertones are still present. The fruits do emerge when water is sprayed on them. The dominant flavor is aloe vera with a hint of apricot. The length is average. The palate is now completely dominated by the vanilla bean paste flavor that was there earlier.
