Description:

100% Carménère from the Maule Valley of Chile's La Higuera vineyard. A blend of stainless steel tanks and brand-new two-year-old French oak barrels are used to mature the wine for 12 months. Additionally, it has a minimum of 6 months of bottle aging before release and only 3 g/L of residual sugar.

Here at Reverse Wine Snob, we have a love/hate relationship with Carmenere. Because we are extremely sensitive to the common green pepper (pyrazine) notes in this type, they destroy the wine for us when they are overdone. Let's see how today's wine does.

Sample offered for evaluation. Despite having an SRP of about $20 and an average wine-searcher price of $19, we found the Terranoble Gran Reserva Carménère at Costco for just $12.99. Winebow Imports is the importer.

The 2018 Terranoble Gran Reserva Carmenere starts off with a pleasant bouquet of black fruit, a touch of spice, and that distinctive vegetal green pepper note that is so typical to this varietal. Although it smells a little stronger than we would like, we frequently discover that it doesn't taste quite as intense.

A sip of the wine reveals it to be smooth, silky, and delectable, with well-integrated spiciness to pair with the luscious black fruit. There is some of the vegetal green pepper note behind it.

With lots of lingering licorice and hints of green pepper under the dark fruit, it has a dry and protracted finish. This is a great illustration of Carmenere. Give it a few hours to breathe so that it can perform at its best.
