Description:

The Ardbeg Distillery, stationed along the southern coast of the island of Islay, was established in 1815 by the MacDougall family. Around a third of the island’s population had been engaged in whisky production by the end of the 19th century.

Due to the same reason, the distillery became famous for producing some of the boldest and strongest Scotch whisky in the market. Even today, the distillery is a witness to the Scottish legacy and innovation.

Malted barley that has been peated to a level of about 50 phenol parts per million is used to create Ardbeg Single Malt Scotch Whisky. After being delivered to the distillery, the peated barley is ground and mashed with Loch Uigeadail water before being fermented in washbacks built of Oregon pine.

Wooden washbacks absorb some of the heat produced during the fermentation process, making the whisky lighter and richer, but being more expensive and labor-intensive to maintain than stainless steel washbacks. The whisky also gains carbolic chemicals from the hardwood washbacks.

The wash is distilled twice, once via a copper-pot wash still and once through a copper-pot spirit still, after fermentation, which lasts for 55 hours. A purifier, which serves as a small condenser and pumps some of the vapors that are evaporating back into the pot for re-distillation, is a feature of the spirit still. Whisky produced by this uncommon purifying procedure in the industry has a distinctively fresh and malty flavor.

Three whiskies from the regular line-up of Ardbeg are included in this gift set: the traditional Ardbeg 10, the recently released 5-year-old Ardbeg Wee Beastie, and Ardbeg An Oa. Each of these non-chill filtered drinks comes in a 20 cL bottle with a special piece of art concealed beneath the label that can be removed.

The 10 is Ardbeg's signature whisky, Wee Beastie is a distinctive and young whisky with the addition of sherry casks, and An Oa uses three separate casks to mature. It makes the ideal present for anyone interested in the wonders of peated whisky or a budding Scotch enthusiast.
