Description:

Keep it calm, easygoing, and slow-moving. In these quick-paced times, it can sometimes be more prudent to downshift than to accelerate. We should all occasionally treat ourselves to leisure and relaxation because they are priceless commodities. Douglas Laing is well aware of this. They have recently launched a new sub-line under their Old Particular name as a result.

The four distinct whiskies in "The Spiritualist Series" will lead us on a tranquilizing voyage because they are leveled and even-tempered. A 14-year-old single barrel bottling from an unidentified Islay distillery, aged in a refill hogshead, and bottled at cask strength, makes up the first batch. The exquisite interaction of clarity, flavor, and complexity is one of its best qualities.

Instead of vehemence or fierceness, this peaty malt's contemplative beauty was brought to rest after 14 years in a magnificent cask. The first thing I notice about this whisky is how pure and clear it is. Wow! I receive a maracuja freshness, maritime salty, and cotton candy sweetness when I take another whiff. Lemons, gooseberries, and other fruits are also included.

After a brief interval, an energizing apple juice note emerges. It is served with warm, fluffy waffles dusted with powdered sugar. And last but not least, I sense austerity (wet stones, thick rope, old planks). The smoke is ashy and fumy, as though someone had inhaled deeply and then blown the smoke into my face.

The whisky has a fairly lean beginning. But the longer I chew it, the heavier and milkier it becomes. It has a maracuja-like fruity, cookie-like, and "green" flavor (peppers). Of course, peaty (tar) as well! The flavors of caramelized walnuts, vanilla milk, and cocoa powder are also noticeable.

The cask strength ABV is very effectively blended, giving only a slight tingle. Islay malts can be likened to raging beasts because they are fierce, savage, aggressive, and uncontrolled. However, this one is unique. I prefer to contrast it with a stoic phoenix or a vibrant sea serpent because of its roundedness, intricacy, and grace.

The aftertaste lingers and is distinctive. It has a meaty and sweet flavor, similar to how beef carpaccio might taste spread on a honey cake. Along with this unusual but mouthwatering flavor combination, the finish also included grated lemon zest, velvety milk chocolate, and mint-flavored toffee fudge, along with a bunch of rock candy in your camomile tea. Oh, and do not overlook the smoke. We are on Islay, after all!
