Description:

Solist Kavalan In wood barrels that have previously housed Moscatel Sherry, the sherry is matured. Moscatel Sherry: What is it? I had to look it up because I've never had it before, and this is what I discovered. Moscatel is produced from the Moscatel de Alejandria grape variety, the majority of which is grown in the town of Chipiona. It is fortified relatively early in the fermentation process so that more sugar is left behind, similar to how the port is produced.

On the nose, it has layers of dark fruit, dark confections, baking spices, dried orchard fruit, and a small amount of waxy licorice, giving it the texture of brown sugar fruit cake. Water greatly aids in its unpacking because it is so dense.

Thick layers of sherry, licorice, black fruit, apricot, cherries, graham, and spice are present on the palate, giving it the texture of a brown sugar fruit cake. A little water helps to further open it up, just like the scent.

Long winding brown sugar, black fruit, graham, earthy malt, and spice fades are present in the aftertaste. Excellent sense of balance, a round, thick body, and a deep, syrupy feeling.

Really nice Kavalan Solist Moscatel Sherry. From the opening whiff to the lingering fade, the thick, heavy, raisin-fruit-driven sweetness is pleasing. I fell in love with this fantastic whisky right away because of the deep, viscous sweetness and the almost metallic, earthy malt. The only thing about this whisky that I don't like is that I'm now jonesing for more.
