Another whisky in the independent Scottish malt whisky bottler Douglas Laing's Remarkable Regional Malts lineup is Timorous Beastie. We have previously assessed the Scallywag from Speyside (and were not much of a fan). But when we just came across a bottle of Timorous Beastie at a bargain, we decided to buy it because we thought, based on the reported flavor profile and reviews, it might be worth a go.

As was already mentioned, Douglas Laing has been in business since 1948 and offers a wide variety of single malt bottlings. However, the company is perhaps best known for its line of blended malts (also known as vatted malts), which are based in certain Scottish locations. This no-age-statement (NAS) whiskies are made in tiny quantities and have amusing names and inventive labels, like Timorous Beastie, Scallywag, The Epicurean, Rock Oyster, and Big Peat.

One of the palest whiskies I've ever encountered, with an apple juice-like hue. On the nose, it is highly caramelized and sweet. Pear drops and gumthe bears. Apricot, Pear, and tangerine fruit flavors are very prominent. A small bit of maple syrup and honey. Salty peanut fragrance that is slightly rotten and nutty.

Smokey undertones, but it comes off more foul, acidic, and slightly rancid. Despite the pale color, there is definitely a sherry influence. This is excellent and precisely what we wanted.

On the palate, honey and gumthe sweets are first sweet, then there is a zing of cinnamon red hot candies right away (plus allspice, cloves, and black pepper). Yowza. But rather than burning further, the spice shock simply dissipates. The swift entrance of the spices obscures any fruits that may have been present in the aroma, although it does have a lemony, purifying vibe. A little woody and anise-like as well. In the end, after the swallow, the smoky note wafts back up.

The Goal is a lovely burn that lingers. The final ingredients are honey and apple juice. Obtaining those powdery, gelatinous gumthe candy from Asia that has a little sour taste and is less sweet than the typical gummies in North America. Drying (astringent) finish.

A delicious, potent spice blast that is encased in a sweet confectionary covering. This is not at all a timid or retiring person. Therefore, the term seems to be a great misnomer. Here, Blair Athol and the traditional Glen Garioch rule. Not overly complicated but enjoyable to sip.
