Description:

With so many distilleries, NDPs, and individual bottlers selling so many diverse labels on the whiskey/whisky market today, buyers truly need some sort of crutch to make purchase judgments. Reviewer ratings, accolades, blogs, forums, word-of-mouth, whatever it takes to find your way through the modern whisky aisle's maze.

The optimal approach in this situation is likely to draw on prior knowledge. If you appreciate one bottle from a certain producer, it is usually reasonable to infer that you will also enjoy future bottles from that same producer—as long as you don't move on to their "value" tier after sampling one of their premium expressions.

After being pleased by their brewed wheat bourbon, we, therefore, reasoned that buying this McKenzie Straight Rye would be somewhat safe. Since it is a genuine distillery (not sourced), the pricing is comparable, and you are not subject to the whims of the neighbourhood secondary market for barrels that might unexpectedly degrade. The lesson is that generalizations are not always accurate. We simply didn't enjoy this at all.

Since July 2009, the tiny farm distillery Finger Lakes Distilled (Burdett, NY, DSP-NY-15020) in the Finger Lakes Wine Country of New York State has been producing vodkas, gins, and other spirits. Now, whiskies account for the majority of their production:

There are a few bourbons, ryes, white whiskeys, and single malts available.

The mash bill for this straight rye contains 80% rye and 20% malted barley. After at least three years in American oak without chill filtering, it is bottled.

On the nose, it The initial scent is grassy, resembling a cross between wheatgrass and nopales (a cactus). After settling in the glass, there is a note of incomplete fermentation that is similar to wine. The aroma becomes clearer after an even longer rest in the glass: green apples, sour white wine, sourgrass, and maple sugar. It still doesn't have a strong rye aroma at all.

The flavour has a thin substance. A little malty sweetness, a light tongue burn, vanilla-forward oak, and a trace of those sour grape scent notes. Although pleasant, it nevertheless has little in common with traditional rye whiskey.

The duration is Medium overall. A repetition of the palate notes, along with bubble gum, a faint barrel tannin, and a little bitterness from the charcoal. Diminishes gradually without changing.
